What is a fractional CO2 laser ?
For about 30 years, CO2 lasers have been useful for different applications like dermatology, surgery, or aesthetic medicine. The emission of a ray of light concentrated by a gas (CO2) into an infrared wavelength allows to destroy skin lesions, but also, by restimulating the dermal collagen and making a superficial abrasion, to decrease aging effects (pigmentary problems like "age spots", scars, wrinkles and pore dilation...) and to give skin a new sparkle.
The first devices were already very effective, but more risky and causing extended social eviction (facial redness for a few weeks and sometimes even months). For a few years now, new devices have been developed and allow to split the laser ray energy into multiple micro spots spaced regularly. This way, parts of the skin stay untreated (two third of the skin remain intact), from which the skin regeneration can be quicker: healing is easier during the days following the treatment, and the social eviction lasts less.
In practice, fractional CO2 treatment is a painless and effective procedure. Healing takes just 5 to 7 days and with an appropriate make-up there is very little social or professional eviction, (in general 3 to 5 days).
What is radiofrequency technology ?
At Juvilase, we chose the DEKA SmartXide Touch laser: this device allows to use a modern probe combining the CO2 laser technology and a bipolar radiofrequency.
Radiofrequency is the transformation of electromagnetic short waves into heat in the depth of the skin. It improves the CO2 lasertherapy by adding a tightening and remodeling effect deeper into the dermis, while stimulating new collagen production. Although it is riskless, the radiofrequency treatment can sometimes cause an uncomfortable feeling of warmth.
But it allows shorter healing (by decreasing the CO2 laser power necessary for same results), and a greater efficacy, especially for treatments of wrinkles, stretch marks and scars.
